Is your Skin Spring Ready? DrNC's Guide to Spring Worthy Skin

Is your Skin Spring Ready? DrNC's Guide to Spring Worthy Skin

Spring is the season of rebirth so in the spirit of this regenerating time, let’s look at ways to prepare, recharge and achieve the buttery smooth complexion of your dreams. We all have bad skin days, particularly after winter when skin can be left feeling overwhelmingly dry and dull. The cold air outside and heating inside can zap the life out of anyone’s skin.

There are some cardinal rules for spring skin that is glowing with health: cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate and protect. First things first, you need to get yourself a gentle cleanser. The ideal cleanser is free of detergents and oil, will remove the day’s makeup and debris, but won’t strip your skin of its natural oils. If it doesn’t foam up when you use it it’s likely a winner, try the CONCENTRATED CLEANSER in our range if you want a universal cleanser suited to all skin types and conditions.

Next up, exfoliation, the secret behind smoother skin. Proper exfoliation not only removes dead skin cells, it can help to minimize pores and even out fine lines. It also helps fade pigmentation and prevent acne.

Our skin naturally sheds dead skin cells to make way for new cells on average every 30 days. This process slows down to every 60 days past the age of 30!!! Sometimes the old cells don’t shed completely which can leave skin with dry, flaky patches and clogged pores.

Exfoliation can help get rid of the dead cells , speed up the production of fresh new ones, leaving your skin gorgeous, glowing and luminous. But NOT with mechanical based beads and scrubs! These will age your skin and increase irritation and inflammation.

You need to invest in the right ingredients in the right concentrations, known as AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids).

Basically, they help your skin do what it does naturally does, but better. Exfoliation with using AHAs and BHAs daily achieves positive results in several ways. It improves circulation leaving your skin brighter and with more radiance. It improves the absorption of skin care products so the formula can get deep down for maximum effectiveness. I refer to this as “penetration enhancers”. By getting rid of the old and dead skin cells, your skins capacity to absorb nutrients and ingredients is enhanced.

Long-term exfoliation can also increase collagen and elastin production which promotes skin plumpness and elasticity.

There are two types of exfoliant. Products that are abrasive and require manual rubbing are known as physical exfoliants, for example scrubs and brushes. But these can cause irritation, reddening and dryness. Overtime they wear down the skins natural barrier creating a plethora of skin problems like rosacea, acne, sensitivity and ageing.

The second type of exfoliant uses fruit acids to clarify the skin. These naturally occurring chemical exfoliants can have a dramatic effect on skin tone and texture by gently dissolving the dead cells on the upper layer of the skin surface, while leaving the healthy new skin underneath undamaged. Used correctly, they can give your skin a glow that you would be hard pressed to achieve through mechanical scrubbing.

Gentle chemical exfoliants generally contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) which are beneficial for hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, fine lines, sun damage and uneven skin tone. Long term use with AHAs can increase collagen production resulting in firmer, tighter skin.

These chemical exfoliants can also be based on Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) which are oil soluble. That means these acids can go deep into hair follicles to remove excess oils and dead skin cells to unclog pores and reduce breakouts and smooth out your skin.

Our CONCENTRATED CLARIFIER is a combination of AHA and BHA ingredients to provide optimal skin rejuvenation in a home use product. Safe and effective, it has the perfect combination of AHAs and BHAs all in the one product.

Our CONCENTRATED MICROPEEL is the ideal home use treatment. Forget the inconvenience of going into a clinic for a microderm. These sachets are packed with a powerful combination of lactic, tartaric, glycolic, mandelic and salicylic acids. Use once a week on the face neck chest and hands for total skin rejuvenation.

Never forget, good sun protection is the ultimate anti-ageing product and one of the cheapest too. Sunscreens are either chemical based or physical based. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing the sun’s rays but can be irritating to some skins and more prone to cause allergic reactions. Physical sunscreens protect skin by deflecting or blocking the sun’s rays and have been shown to be suitable for delicate skin. Use a physical sunscreen with a SPF 30  or higher on a daily basis. Check out our CC+ Cream, SPF 30. Boosted with B3 (aka niacinamide) it adds further protection against infrared, blue light and environmental pollutants.

Remember sun’s rays are deadly! Not just by causing skin cancer BUT they speed up the process of ageing. It’s the single biggest cause of pigmentation. It activates enzymes in your skin that eat up your collagen and elastin. UV rays switch on other enzymes that make capillaries, giving you the dreaded rosacea glow!

So daily protection with SPF 30 and above is essential.

Beautiful skin is achievable for everyone. Good skincare is a lifetime practice and the rewards are there every time you look in the mirror. A little investment in regular treatments can boost your skin even further and prevent signs of ageing.

If you’re in need of an immediate ‘pep up’ and want dramatic results, a Carbon Spectra Peel will immediately achieve complete epidermal exfoliation with minimal downtime and no discomfort. If redness and acne are the some of your skincare woes, then laser layer and add in our Gold Toning treatment. Using a special laser wavelength (595nm), it will reduce inflammation, prevent further break outs and stimulate collagen production. Helps fade out those acne spots and fix any broken capillaries at the same time. You can achieve an instant glow and be not only Spring ready but EVENT ready! All with NO DOWNTIME!

For a deeper detox, look no further than the HydraFacial. Using a patented tip, this medical-grade facial uses a vacuum suction technique to deep cleanse every follicle. It follows through with an exfoliating gentle peel, then finishes by infusing a perfect blend of antioxidant, hydrating nutrients into the skin.

If you cannot make a choice between The Carbon Spectra, Gold Toning or The HydraFacial, go for gold and grab the Trifecta. This combines all three treatments in the one sitting. A process I call Laser Layering. Combining the technologies gives greater results more quickly.
