The Future of Skincare is Australian

Australian innovation

When it comes to breakthroughs in technology and science, Australia has a range of groundbreaking achievements under its belt. Whether it’s the farmers battling the drought with new techniques for rearing livestock in harsher climatic conditions; our volunteer firefighters tackling record-breaking bushfires head-on, or our research scientists discovering new ways to overcome global pandemics, it’s clear that we innovate in the face of adversity.

Did you know we pioneered the following “world-changing” inventions:

The black box flight recorder that is now installed on  EVERY commercial flight   around the world

Spray on skin (Dr Fiona Woods) that treats burns victims and saved the lives of 28 people in the Bali bombings let alone thousands around the world.

Here is a few more to highlight :

  • The electronic heart pacemaker
  • Google maps!
  • Penicillin (good on you Mr Florey)
  • Cochlear implants
  • Gardasil vaccine against HPV and preventing cervical cancer
  • WiFi  Technology
  • Ultrasound scanner which forever changed prenatal care and gave the world a way to image the human foetus without using harmful Xrays.

For a small population on a remote island, we definitely hit above our weight when it comes to new innovations. You could say that our remoteness becomes our greatest gift, fuelling ingenuity.

An Australian approach to skincare

This is no different when it comes to our skincare technology. Personally one of my key motivations has been to formulate skincare that combats one of the harshest environments in the world, here down under. We have sky-high UV levels (pun intended), year-round infrared radiation leading to some of the highest skin cancer rates globally, as well as a range of other skin conditions.

As Dermatologists in Australia, we have our work cut out for us (and we do plenty of that! as in taking out skin cancers) this however gives us the conditions and stimulation for innovation. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention.

So when it comes to formulating skincare as a Derm Downunder, every day we are looking for the next active ingredient, backed by science, to integrate into our skin protective toolkit. Because in Australia, you cannot get away with ineffective skincare.

The next big ingredient? Australian discovered B3.

My philosophy when it comes to formulating has always been about the right concentrations of the best active ingredients in clever combinations to deliver results. Making skincare that can perform and protect against our increasingly harmful environment. This is where I want to focus on the power of Vitamin B3 also known as niacinamide.

It has been predominantly Aussie Pioneering research that has put Vitamin B3 / Niacinamide, back into the spotlight. It takes the cake when we are talking about multitasking potential to the point it should be in the drinking water. (On that note, stay tuned for the next blog on the benefits of oral B3). Yep, this is the stuff that will keep your body forever young. That's why I’ve put it across my range of skincare.

So why B3 - Breaking down the benefits

Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) has to be one of the most underrated antioxidants/anti-inflammatories in skincare (despite the fact it is one of the most studied). It really tackles all 6 of the key skin concerns including acne/congestion, ageing, sensitivity/rosacea, sun damage, pigmentation and dehydration.

B3 is scientifically proven to be readily absorbed into the skin ( a feat on its own as so many ingredients don’t) and it is incredibly stable (ie it does not easily oxidise / breakdown). This means you have an ingredient that is readily available. WE love a stable table when it comes to skincare ingredients, and vitamin B3 is a rare find.

B3, DNA and Beyond…

Problem - Free Radicals - Did you know that oxygen is not only essential for the human body to survive BUT paradoxically one of the most damaging molecules when it comes to the ageing of the skin. A process is known as oxidative damage.

The process of oxidation in the human body damages DNA, cell membranes, cellular proteins and lipids. Yep sounds pretty bad. In summary, this means it accelerates the ageing process and then some!

Solution - Superman vitamin: niacinamide B3 - B3 reboots cellular energy (known as our mitochondria) and feeds and protects our body’s DNA. As an Antioxidant, B3 works like a mop that soaks up free radicals, stops oxidation and prevents them from wreaking havoc on your cells in your skin and your entire body for that matter. What is not to love...

The super summary: Breaking down the extended benefits of B3.

  • A potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that Repairs UV and  environmental induced DNA damage;
  • Protects the skin’s immune system; It acts as a sunscreen for the skin. Minimising the risk of sunspots and skin cancer.
  • Fades and prevents pigment and sunspots
  • Restores cellular energy in sun-damaged skin cells minimising ageing.
  • Stops wrinkles, and collagen by preserving our collagen production cells (A.K.A fibroblasts);

It’s a no brainer really and everyone on this planet should be using it daily on their skin.

We are the only range in the world that infuses this stellar ingredient across multiple products in the one range. Aside from the low PH formulations that use AHAs & BHAs, B3 sits in every formulation in 5-10% concentrations.
